About the position

Leidos is seeking a Paralegal to work in Camp Springs, MD, as part of a dynamic team providing legal and technical services to support the Department of Justice and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Office of Chief Counsel (USCIS). This role involves engaging in mandamus litigation, visa appeals, and complex/class action cases. As a Paralegal, you will develop essential skills such as time and task management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex issues concisely. You will also be responsible for solving intricate problems using available tools and resources. In this position, you will work under the direction of a Project Manager, Project Supervisor, or Supervisory Paralegal. Your primary responsibilities will include compiling, preparing, and summarizing relevant materials for attorneys in preparation for discovery, motions, briefs, and other legal documents. You will maintain case files, perform simple legal research, and manage document discovery processes. Additionally, you will assist attorneys in the courtroom, review documents for relevance and privilege, and compile documents for FOIA requests and Congressional inquiries. You will also be tasked with organizing and updating individual litigation files, determining the status of applications and petitions, and conducting necessary research and correspondence between the Department of Justice and USCIS. This role requires the use of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research and ensure effective communication between involved parties. The position is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and grow within the legal field, providing a comprehensive experience in litigation support.

Responsibilities

  • Compile, prepare, and summarize relevant materials for attorneys in preparation for discovery, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Maintain case files and perform simple legal research.
  • Manage document discovery processes, including indexing, tracking, and controlling documents produced and received in discovery.
  • Assist attorneys in the courtroom and review documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines.
  • Organize, update, and ensure completeness of individual litigation files.
  • Determine the status and location of applications/petitions and perform systems checks to validate facts.
  • Conduct necessary research and correspondence between the Department of Justice and USCIS for lawsuits.
  • Use legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.

Requirements

  • Paralegal certificate, JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school with at least one year of study completed.
  • At least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience.
  • Basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation and experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with various computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and imaging systems.
  • Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
  • US Citizen and ability to obtain a Public Trust.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with FOIA requests and Congressional inquiries.
