About the position

The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Paralegal to join our Norfolk office. This position is crucial in providing legal representation to indigent defendants in federal criminal cases and related matters, as mandated by the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A. The paralegal will play a vital role in supporting staff attorneys and administrative personnel, ensuring that all legal processes are handled efficiently and effectively. In this role, the paralegal will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are essential to the preparation and management of legal cases. These tasks include obtaining legal, medical, and educational records, assisting with case preparation, managing files, and reviewing and summarizing discovery materials. The paralegal will also draft legal correspondence, assist attorneys during hearings and trials, and interact with clients and their families to provide necessary support. Additionally, the position involves litigation support and preparing jury instructions, which are critical components of the legal process. To qualify for this position, applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in a legal setting or an equivalent background. A high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat, is required. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of law office operations, legal practices, and criminal law, including criminal procedure and evidence. Experience in federal criminal law and trial support duties is preferred. Graduate-level education from an accredited institution may substitute for experience. The physical demands of the position include the ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds occasionally, and reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities. The paralegal will primarily work in an office environment, with some travel required, necessitating a valid driver's license.
