About the position

The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) is seeking a dedicated Paralegal to join the Rackets Bureau's Worker Protection Unit (WPU) and its Construction Fraud Task Force. This unit plays a crucial role in investigating issues such as wage theft, construction-related fatalities and injuries, workplace safety hazards, and fraud targeting workers, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations. The WPU collaborates with community and worker rights organizations to safeguard marginalized communities and partners with various city, state, and federal agencies to build cases that can have a significant impact across the industry. In this role, the Paralegal will be instrumental in supporting both long-term and short-term investigations focused on worker safety and exploitation. As a Paralegal in the WPU, you will assist the unit in all aspects of investigations, which includes drafting subpoenas, correspondence, and legal documents. You will be responsible for organizing and managing large volumes of data and search warrant documents, compiling and analyzing case documents for grand juries and trials, and performing related administrative and clerical tasks. Additionally, you will take detailed notes during interviews, prepare, organize, and redact documents to comply with discovery obligations, and collaborate with various community organizations and governmental agencies to further the unit's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Unit in all aspects of investigations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college (Level 1).
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and one (1) year of experience as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent (Level 2).
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience as a paralegal in the criminal justice field or equivalent (Level 3).

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish.
  • Prior experience in the criminal justice or nonprofit industry.
  • Interest in worker rights, immigrant rights, construction safety and accountability.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills.
  • Ability to learn and use various computer databases.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and follow directions.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff, court representatives, and law enforcement representatives.
  • Willingness to work overtime and flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
