About the position

As a Paralegal at Contact Government Services, LLC (CGS), you will play a crucial role in providing litigation and administrative support to a group of United States Attorneys. You will work under the guidance of a Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor, engaging in a variety of tasks that are essential to the legal process. Your responsibilities will include collecting court-ordered restitutions and fines from criminal and civil defendants, drafting and filing legal documents using the Electronic Court Filing system (ECF), and preparing garnishments, liens, and other legal process documents. You will also manage and track collection activities in an internal database, communicate with AUSAs in the Monetary Penalties Unit (MPU), and conduct fact research in public information databases to gather information and identify assets. Additionally, you will prepare various legal documents using templates, assist in trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, and maintain calendars for active cases and assigned AUSAs. In this role, you will be expected to perform routine document center support functions, such as photocopying, delivering items, and organizing case files. You will also be responsible for maintaining, managing, and organizing case material using software applications, sorting incoming mail, and preparing outgoing mail. Responsibilities

  • Collect court ordered restitutions and fines of criminal and civil defendants.
  • Draft and file legal documents using the Electronic Court Filing system (ECF).
  • Prepare garnishments, liens, and other legal process documents for collection.
  • Send demand letters, file liens, run credit reports, and prepare and submit subpoenas.
  • Manage and track collection activity in an internal database.
  • Communicate with and coordinate collection activity with AUSAs in the Monetary Penalties Unit (MPU).
  • Complete fact research in public information databases and other research databases to gather information and identify assets.
  • Prepare legal documents using templates, such as motions, memoranda, subpoenas, correspondence, discovery documents, and other similar documents and forms.
  • Perform routine document center support functions, such as photocopying, delivering items, assembling notebooks, and packing boxes for shipment.
  • Provide trial preparation assistance to AUSAs by independently compiling trial notebooks, preparing jury instructions, and drafting witness and exhibit lists.
  • Open new case files, close case files, and organize case files for disposition or storage.
  • Maintain calendar of active cases and assigned AUSAs by scheduling appointments, interviews, and conferences.
  • Assist AUSAs in producing discovery to defense counsel.
  • Sort incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail including packaging boxes for shipment.

Requirements

  • Requires paralegal certificate, JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
  • One year of legal training or legal experience or at least two years of college education may be substituted for the paralegal certificate.
  • At least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience is required; trial experience is very helpful.
  • Basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memoranda.
  • Experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and imaging systems.
  • Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
