About the position

The Paralegal position under the general supervision of an attorney involves a variety of responsibilities that are crucial to the legal process. The primary duties include reviewing case files to identify necessary documents and witnesses, drafting and analyzing legal documents such as pleadings, motions, and discovery requests. This role requires the preparation of expert witness designations, deposition summaries, legal memoranda, jury instructions, and subpoenas. Additionally, the paralegal will assist during trials, hearings, and council meetings, utilizing litigation and document management software as well as e-Discovery tools to ensure the accuracy and responsiveness of documents. The position also involves collecting and compiling technical information to provide independent recommendations to the supervising attorney, communicating with court personnel, law enforcement, and other government agencies, and conducting legal and procedural research. The paralegal will be responsible for cite-checking legal memoranda and motions, and performing other duties as assigned. The current vacancy is within the Office of the City Attorney, specifically for the Civil Division, although this recruitment may also fill positions in the Criminal Division. Candidates should be aware that employees in this role are expected to complete mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) every two years, including courses in legal ethics and specialized law. The position offers a salary range of $84,864.00 to $102,377.60 annually, with potential for future wage increases. This role is essential for supporting attorneys in their legal work and ensuring that all documentation and procedures are handled efficiently and accurately. The paralegal will play a vital role in the legal team, contributing to the successful management of cases and legal processes.

Responsibilities

  • Review case files to determine required documents and witnesses.
  • Draft and analyze legal documents including pleadings, motions, and discovery requests.
  • Prepare expert witness designations and declarations in support.
  • Summarize depositions and prepare legal memoranda.
  • Prepare jury instructions and arrange for subpoenas duces tecum.
  • Assist at trials, hearings, and council meetings.
  • Utilize litigation and document management software and e-Discovery tools.
  • Collect, compile, and utilize technical information for recommendations to the supervising attorney.
  • Communicate with court personnel, law enforcement, and other government agencies.
  • Conduct legal and procedural research and cite-check legal memoranda and motions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Certificate of completion of a Paralegal Program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).
  • Certificate of completion of a Paralegal Program at a post-secondary institution with a minimum of 24 semester/36 quarter college-level units in law-related coursework.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher with one year of full-time law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with three years of full-time law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three to five years of substantial paralegal experience in civil litigation personal injury, premises liability, insurance defense, employment law, or land use civil litigation practice.
  • Experience with civil litigation discovery in Federal and State jurisdictions.
  • Experience in trial preparation and assistance.
  • Experience drafting civil litigation pleadings, motions, and briefs.
  • Experience utilizing civil litigation case and document management software.
