About the position

Clean Harbors is looking for an experienced Paralegal to fill a key role in its busy corporate legal department. This position will provide general support to all attorneys in the Clean Harbors Law Department, with a specific focus on supporting the employment and commercial litigation group within the department. The role is essential in managing litigation cases and files, including employment, commercial, and collection matters. The company prioritizes health and safety, ensuring a positive and safe work environment for all employees. In this role, you will assist attorneys with the management of litigation cases, providing litigation support to both in-house and outside counsel. This includes drafting discovery requests and responses for attorney review and approval, conducting initial reviews of new matters, and gathering supporting documents and evidence related to cases. You will also be responsible for preparing draft position statements and responses to administrative claims filed before federal, state, and local agencies. Additionally, you will manage bankruptcy claims documentation, serve as the primary contact for outside collection agencies, and prepare and file documentation in local small claims court actions. Legal research will also be a part of your responsibilities, along with managing court filing fees and maintaining updates in the case database. The position requires effective prioritization and management of multiple tasks within deadlines in a fast-paced environment, as well as strong communication skills to build relationships with colleagues and work collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys with management of the law department litigation cases and files, including employment, commercial, and collection matters.
  • Provide litigation support to in-house and outside counsel through drafting discovery requests and responses for attorney review/approval.
  • Perform case intakes by conducting initial review of new matters, identifying key players with knowledge of the subject events within the Company, and gathering supporting documents and other evidence related to the case.
  • Assist in-house and outside counsel in responding to lawsuits and communicating with Courts, opposing counsel, customers, vendors, sheriffs and related parties accordingly.
  • Prepare for attorney review draft position statements and responses to administrative claims filed before federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Manage bankruptcy claims documentation and files, such as proofs of claims.
  • Serve as primary contact for outside collection agencies pursuing outstanding balances for the Company.
  • Prepare and file documentation and forms in local small claims court actions for the Company.
  • Conduct legal research as requested by attorneys.
  • Prepare documents and forms for filing lawsuits in court and arrange for service of process of complaints and subpoenas both in-state and foreign.
  • Manage court filing fees, services of process fees/invoices and process server fees.
  • Support litigation team as needed to investigate and respond to attorney demand letters and administrative requests for information.
  • Respond to subpoenas and requests for records.
  • Accurately manage updates in case database in accordance with Department needs and maintain various statistical databases required by management for reporting/auditing purposes like collections statistics and litigation spreadsheets.
  • Develop proposed policies, procedures, and written guidance compliant with related state, federal, local or agency employment practice regulations.

Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree is required; a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred.
  • 3+ years experience in a paralegal role.
  • Effectively prioritize, manage, and complete multiple tasks within deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clearly convey information both verbally and in writing, build strong relationships with colleagues, and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Apply critical thinking to interpret complex information, identify issues, and develop effective solutions.
