About the position

The Paralegal 1 position at the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association (OCSEA) is responsible for providing research, investigation, and analysis to support case preparation and presentation, particularly in arbitration and grievance matters. The role involves drafting legal documents, advocating for union members, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and agreements. This position serves as a key support role within the Office of General Counsel, interacting with various stakeholders to facilitate effective dispute resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Research arbitration, judicial, and administrative agency decisions to support case preparation.
  • Write memoranda, reports, and correspondence based on research findings.
  • Assist in preparing opening and closing arguments for arbitration grievances.
  • Analyze documentation submitted with arbitration committee appeal letters and write original appeal letters.
  • Research, prepare, and advocate for Working Out of Classification grievances.
  • Request arbitration on WOC grievances in a timely manner.
  • Enforce WOC decisions and settlement agreements by coordinating with relevant parties.
  • Train members on WOC grievance procedures at Chapter and Assembly meetings.
  • Draft and review arbitration briefs and memoranda summarizing arbitration awards.
  • Conduct investigations and research to support the OCSEA Arbitration Committee's decisions.
  • Coordinate work with other Office of General Counsel employees to ensure deadlines are met.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a certification program for paralegal or legal assistant, or twelve months of law school.
  • Two years of experience as a paralegal performing similar duties.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Ohio Revised Code, Administrative Code, and Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel.
