The Principal Planner position within the Planning and Community Development Department is a full-time role based in Surry County, VA. This position is responsible for coordinating and processing various permits and applications, including rezoning, conditional use permits, and subdivision reviews. The Principal Planner will provide essential staff support for the Board of Historic and Architectural Review and the Planning Commission, while also contributing to long-range planning goals and initiatives. The role operates under the supervision of the Director of Planning and Community Development and will take charge of the Planning Division in the Director's absence. Key responsibilities include coordinating conditional use permits, conducting site plan reviews, and making presentations to various boards and commissions. The Principal Planner will be tasked with writing technical reports and providing professional recommendations on critical land use decisions. Additionally, the role involves managing special projects that align with the County's strategic planning goals, conducting detailed planning research and analysis, and acting as a liaison to developers. The position also requires drafting and coordinating new ordinances and comprehensive plan elements to accommodate changes from legislation or new County policies. The Principal Planner will facilitate citizen participation activities to encourage action or resolve issues related to planning activities and projects. This includes negotiating and resolving complex issues related to policy and development proposals, building consensus with community leaders, organizations, and stakeholders. The role also involves researching federal and state grant funding sources, preparing grant applications, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
