About the position

The Henrico County Attorney's Office is seeking a full-time litigation paralegal to provide comprehensive legal and administrative support to attorneys representing the County and the Henrico County School Board in various state and federal litigation matters. This role involves a wide array of paraprofessional duties, including managing legal files and documents, assisting with pleadings, preparing discovery materials, and providing support during trials. The successful candidate will work closely with a collaborative team of fourteen attorneys, three paralegals, and three legal assistants, ensuring that all legal services provided to the County are of the highest quality. The position requires a strong understanding of court rules and procedures, particularly in relation to electronic filing in federal courts, as well as proficiency in legal research and document management. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational and communication skills, professional judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Additionally, the role demands a keen attention to detail and the capacity to analyze complex legal documents efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide array of paraprofessional legal and administrative support duties in support of attorneys in the County Attorney's office.
  • Organize and manage legal files and documents, including confidential and sensitive information.
  • Assist litigation attorneys with preparing pleadings for filing and preparing discovery materials.
  • Provide backup support for condemnation, code enforcement, and bankruptcy work as needed.
  • Assist with record collection efforts and respond to record requests.
  • Coordinate the issuance of subpoenas and assist with court and administrative hearing scheduling.
  • Exhibit good professional judgment, initiative, and exceptional attention to detail in all tasks.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary studies, training, or program resulting in certification or degree as a legal assistant or paralegal.
  • Four (4) years of experience working as a legal assistant or paralegal, preferably supporting litigation attorneys.
  • Knowledge of court rules and procedures, especially in federal courts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and electronic filing systems.
  • Ability to perform legal research and analyze complex legal documents.
  • Outstanding organizational and communication skills.
