About the position

The Paralegal will be a generalist who supports the work of the Office of General Counsel and the activities of a diverse workforce. They will help ensure that AKF programs and services operate with the highest integrity and follow applicable laws and regulations. Under the general supervision of the General Counsel, they will work closely with project managers and other key stakeholders at AKF. The role requires experience in researching and working on matters related to health insurance, fraud, waste & abuse, corporate compliance, information privacy, and human resources. The essential functions of the position include performing first-level contract reviews of vendor, partner, and other strategic agreements to flag legal and compliance obligations and concerns. The Paralegal will conduct legal research on a broad range of topics related to AKF programs and initiatives, assist in discovery related to litigation, investigations, informal inquiries, and other matters. They will manage a contracts database and internal processes for the appropriate review and execution of contracts, as well as a compliance program documentation database for ease of staff access. Additionally, the Paralegal will review master compliance program materials to ensure they are current and in line with best practices and federal health care program guidance. They will assist in the development of policies and practices that demonstrate AKF's commitment to compliance with OIG Advisory Opinion 97-1. The role involves collaboration with other divisions to direct legal and compliance issues to appropriate existing channels for investigation and resolution. The Paralegal will also assist in handling sensitive human resources matters through record and fact gathering, perform targeted internal programmatic audits, and promote a culture of compliance within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the response to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree with a major in paralegal studies or paralegal certification.
  • 5-7 years of experience, with a background in health care or related non-profit activities (law firm, government or in-house).
  • General familiarity with federal fraud and abuse laws and Office of the Inspector General oversight.
  • Experience and working knowledge of corporate and regulatory compliance programs and contract review.

Nice-to-haves

  • Non-profit experience is preferred but not required.
