The Department of Public Service's Office of Consumer Services (OCS) is seeking to hire Paralegals and Legal Assistants to assist in the processing, investigation, and resolution of utility consumer complaints. This role is crucial in ensuring that consumer complaints regarding utility services are handled efficiently and effectively. The selected candidates will be responsible for analyzing the factual bases of these complaints and applying the appropriate laws or regulations to investigate each case thoroughly. The position requires individuals to provide information and answer questions related to consumer complaints, review and analyze company records, and respond to customer inquiries both verbally and in writing. Candidates will direct service providers to gather relevant information about disputes, conduct premise inspections, or meter tests to assess service adequacy and billing accuracy. Additionally, they will be responsible for recording and gathering complaint information, assisting in report preparation, and instructing service providers on actions needed to resolve disputes. This role demands personnel who can develop specialized knowledge of Public Service Law and Regulations through research and training. Prior experience as a legal secretary, paralegal, or investigator, as well as experience in dispute resolution, is highly beneficial. Candidates must possess strong oral and written communication skills, analytical abilities, and the capacity to conduct factual investigations into customer service and consumer protection complaints. Attention to deadlines is critical to protect consumer rights. A high school diploma is required, and a college degree is preferred.
