About the position

The Paramedic at Duke University Hospital plays a crucial role in providing direct patient care as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. This position involves performing a variety of clinical activities across different practice settings and patient populations, ensuring adherence to the Paramedic scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Medical Board. The Paramedic is responsible for monitoring patients, documenting care, and communicating effectively with the healthcare team to enhance patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care in accordance with the Paramedic scope of practice.
  • Assist clinical staff in the evaluation, treatment, and care of patients.
  • Obtain pertinent history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform technical procedures as delegated by clinical staff.
  • Monitor patients and maintain records using patient monitoring systems and electronic health records.
  • Document patients' status and delivery of care according to established protocols.
  • Communicate essential information to appropriate members of the healthcare team.
  • Operate medical and mechanical equipment in the hospital and transport environment.
  • Ensure all medical equipment is functioning and restock medical supplies as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Properly dispose of sharps and soiled materials in accordance with policy.
  • Act as a preceptor and support the development of other staff and learners.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain certifications and clinical skills.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; Associate's Degree preferred.
  • Current certification as a North Carolina Paramedic required.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS required upon hire.
  • Preferred one-year experience as a Paramedic or relevant clinical experience.
  • Knowledge of and appropriate application of Paramedic scope of practice.
  • Ability to assess needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, and healthcare team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current trauma course preferred: PHTLS, BTLS, or ITLS.
