Responsibilities

• Communicates effectively with patients, students, and the public.
• Explains care and treatment to patients and their families.
• Communicates from the field with medical control and allied emergency personnel.
• Applies knowledge and skills of emergency pre-hospital care and treatment.
• Acts within the state of Iowa scope of practice for the Paramedic or EMT level.
• Provides basic patient assessment and care including assessment and management of the patient's airway, breathing, and circulatory status.
• Maintains competency in basic and advanced airway skills.
• Displays knowledge of dosage, route, indication, and administration of medications.
• Completes required skills maintenance and competency standards.
• Displays proficiency in vascular access, including IV/IO techniques.
• Performs capably and competently under stressful situations.
• Demonstrates competence during life-threatening situations.
• Correctly interprets individual situations and acts according to protocol.
• Is calm and decisive in new or stressful situations.
• Recognizes limitations and seeks help from appropriate sources.
• Prioritizes patients' conditions and triages appropriately during a multi-casualty incident.

Requirements

• Graduation from a Paramedic or EMT program.
• Possess a current valid Paramedic certification or EMT certification as issued by the IDPH Bureau of EMS.
• Continue to obtain necessary CEH requirements.
• Possess a current, valid chauffeur license.
