About the position

The position is responsible for evaluating donor suitability for automated pheresis procedures and administering approved immunizations. The role includes providing limited emergency medical care to donors and staff, promoting positive customer relations, and conducting confidential interviews to assess donor eligibility. The individual will work closely with the Center Medical Director and respond to medically related inquiries, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations while maintaining donor confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate donor suitability for automated pheresis procedures.
  • Administer approved immunizations other than red blood cell immunizations.
  • Provide limited emergency medical care to donors and staff.
  • Conduct confidential and effective interviews with donors to obtain necessary information regarding suitability to donate plasma.
  • Respond to medically related questions from staff regarding donor suitability.
  • Perform medical history reviews and health assessments on donors.
  • Assess results of donor screening and laboratory tests to determine donor suitability.
  • Notify and counsel donors regarding reactive test results.
  • Refer donors to community facilities for follow-up and counseling.
  • Explain informed consent to applicant donors, including procedures and potential risks.
  • Handle medical emergencies at the Center according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Check emergency kits to ensure supplies are present and in-date.
  • Review test results and determine continued donor suitability.
  • Maintain knowledge of and apply rules regarding four-month approvals and grace periods.
  • Assess signs and symptoms that may affect a donor's ability to continue donating.
  • Oversee donor immunization programs and review antibody titer results as required.
  • Ensure accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system.
  • Maintain a clean and efficient work environment and ensure sufficient operating supplies are available.
  • Follow all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and OSHA policies and procedures.
  • Conduct routine audits of internal procedures and documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor, and center information.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a paramedic, nursing, physician assistant, chiropractic, medical school or naturopathic medical training program.
  • If graduated from a foreign medical school, must be licensed as a physician or certified as an emergency medical technician.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in a health care environment.
  • Experience in a plasma or whole blood collection center or other regulated environment preferred.
  • Ability to make and analyze a physical assessment of heart, lung sounds, signs of drug use, etc.
  • Ability to instruct donors, staff, and community regarding the benefits of plasma donation programs.
