About the position

The Special Education Paraprofessional plays a crucial role in supporting the special education services teacher to enhance student achievement. This position involves assisting in planning and implementing learning experiences for pre-kindergarten students, creating a safe and healthy learning environment, and providing small group instruction. The paraprofessional will also engage families in the special education program and help with the organization of instructional materials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the special education teacher in providing instructional and support services for students.
  • Help plan and implement learning experiences for pre-kindergarten students.
  • Develop a safe and healthy learning environment for students.
  • Provide small group instruction as directed by the teacher.
  • Organize and prepare instructional materials for lessons.
  • Encourage family involvement in the special education program.
  • Maintain routine records related to attendance, grades, and behavior as assigned.
  • Assist with the physical needs of students, including toileting and feeding.
  • Support students in using mobility equipment and other classroom materials.
  • Manage student behavior and assist in crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Attend IEP meetings as requested and support teachers during field trips.
  • Supervise students in the absence of the responsible teacher and implement behavior management plans.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited college, or a passing score on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act.
  • Demonstrated success in relevant work experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with diverse groups.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a team member.
  • Physical strength and mobility to assist students as needed.
  • Proficiency in using technology for communication and data management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in a special education environment.
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
  • First aid or basic nursing care experience.

  • Full-time employment with a salary range of $24,016 - $32,322 per year.
