About the position

The Paraprofessional - Special Education Interrelated position is designed to support classroom teachers in providing educational opportunities for students with special needs. This role involves assisting with instructional activities, preparing materials, and addressing the unique needs of students, including those with physical disabilities. The position requires collaboration with teachers and other staff to ensure a conducive learning environment for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts small group or individual classroom activities with students based on lesson plans developed by the teacher.
  • Assists with preparation of materials for instruction, including copying, bulletin board construction, and grading work.
  • Performs special duties to meet the unique needs of specific student populations, such as lifting physically disabled students and providing toileting or personal hygiene assistance.
  • Types and processes correspondence, reports, orders, and catalog cards.
  • Operates the computerized circulation system and maintains records.
  • Files catalog cards and assists in inventory of materials and equipment.
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation of the media center and supervises students in the absence of the media specialist.
  • Assists with routine record keeping and school-wide supervision, such as loading/unloading buses.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned to support the educational services.

Requirements

  • Hold an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution.
  • Completed two years of college coursework (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) above the remedial level with a grade of 'C' or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution.
  • Passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and hold a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Paraprofessional experience serving school-age children is desirable.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a GaPSC-issued Paraprofessional License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual or bicultural experience is preferred for certain positions.
  • Training or experience in special needs of disabled populations, such as first aid and behavior management.
