About The Position

The Special Education Paraprofessional at Mount Pleasant Public Schools plays a crucial role in supporting certified staff and assisting students with special needs. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including monitoring student progress, providing supervision in various settings, and helping students with self-care skills. The paraprofessional is expected to maintain confidentiality and perform additional tasks as assigned by certified staff or administrators.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous employment of specific job-related experience preferably to include working with special education students or post-secondary education in a related job field or some combination thereof.
  • Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or obtain an associate's degree (or higher); or meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment.
  • Physical ability to work with students in the classroom setting to include sitting on the floor and demonstrated ability to lift a minimum of forty (40) pounds.
  • Demonstrated competency in oral and written communication, general accounting, and proofreading.
  • Completion of first aid, CPR, behavior management, physical intervention skills, sign language, Braille, as provided by the district.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, professional tact, diplomacy, and presentation with administrators, students, teachers, parents, and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Assists certified staff in duties relating to methods, materials, and strategies to use with students as well as monitoring the student's progress.
  • Perform non-instructional tasks as assigned by certified staff, supervisor, or designee.
  • Supervision of students outside the classroom in areas such as playground, lunchroom, and community-based experiences.
  • Assist students with self-care skills as needed to include dressing, washing hands, toileting, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of student's individual information.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as assigned by the building administrator or designee and/or certified staff.
