About the position

The Brookline Parks and Open Space Division is seeking an experienced Craftsperson to join our team. The Parks Division maintains a network of beautiful parks and open spaces. This position will provide skilled year-round care, maintenance, and management of Town parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, sanctuaries, and other open spaces, and also participate in seasonal snow removal operations. The role requires a valid CDL Class B and Hoisting License. The salary for this position is $28.29 per hour, along with generous leave time, health and dental insurance benefits, 12 paid holidays, 2 weeks' vacation to start, up to 7 personal days, 15 paid sick days, a pension system, and excellent working conditions. The position will remain open until filled. The primary purpose of this role involves heavy equipment operation and manual labor related to the maintenance of parks, playgrounds, fields, and other facilities. Essential duties include operating vehicles such as dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and leaf collectors, as well as performing a range of manual work including mowing lawns, cleaning tennis courts, weeding, mulching playgrounds, and emptying trash barrels in parks. The Craftsperson will also be responsible for trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, making pathway improvements, performing light masonry work, carpentry, and painting, as well as maintaining athletic fields by painting lines for various sports, rolling and aerating fields, and preparing pitcher's mounds. In addition, the Craftsperson may work at the skating rink to maintain ice surfaces, operate a Zamboni machine, and keep maintenance logs of ice-making equipment. Snow removal duties include plowing, sanding, and shoveling snow around public buildings. The position requires working under the direct supervision of the Zone Manager, following department rules and regulations to complete assignments. The work environment is primarily outdoors, exposing the employee to various weather conditions and potential hazards associated with heavy equipment operation and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles including dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, and leaf collectors.
  • Transport personnel and materials to and from job sites.
  • Conduct safety inspections of vehicles to ensure proper operation.
  • Perform manual work such as mowing lawns and fields, cleaning tennis courts, and weeding.
  • Trim and prune trees and shrubs; make pathway improvements and repairs.
  • Perform light masonry work, carpentry, and painting.
  • Maintain athletic fields by painting lines for soccer, football, and lacrosse.
  • Plow snow, sand, and shovel snow around public buildings.
  • Maintain power equipment such as mowers and blowers.
  • Respond to weather and other emergency situations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience performing labor and driving heavy equipment and trucks.
  • Experience working on grounds maintenance projects, construction projects, and performing snow and ice removal.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class B.
  • Valid MA Hoisting Engineer's License.
