About the position

The Park Maintenance Worker III position is a lead role within the parks and grounds maintenance team, operating under general supervision. This advanced journey level position is responsible for overseeing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks for City parks, grounds, and buildings. The role includes technical or functional supervision over lower-level maintenance workers and requires the ability to perform complex maintenance tasks. The Park Maintenance Worker III will act as the Parks Supervisor in their absence, ensuring that all maintenance activities are carried out efficiently and effectively. In this role, the worker will engage in a wide range of duties, including mowing and edging parks, watering and spraying shrubs, and performing basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. The worker will also supervise the installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems, maintain sports fields, and ensure the cleanliness and functionality of park facilities. The position requires the ability to organize and assign work to subordinate personnel, prepare time and work reports, and assist in planning landscaping and irrigation systems. The Park Maintenance Worker III will utilize various hand and power tools, operate trucks and tractors, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. This position is crucial for maintaining the aesthetic and functional quality of the City’s parks and recreational areas, contributing to the overall enjoyment and safety of the community.

Responsibilities

  • Mows and edges parks and grounds.
  • Waters and sprays shrubs, grass, trees, and flowers.
  • Prunes and trims trees and bushes.
  • Fertilizes and aerates parks; replaces sod.
  • Rakes and sweeps grounds; removes leaves and trash.
  • Assists in supervising the installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems.
  • Performs basic carpentry, concrete, plumbing, and electrical work in parks facilities.
  • Prepares and maintains sports fields by raking, cleaning, and placing markers.
  • Assigns, reviews, and paints parks buildings.
  • Maintains and re-stocks restrooms in parks.
  • Constructs work schedules for assigned crew; assigns and reviews their work.
  • Assists supervisor in planning landscaping and irrigation systems.
  • Prepares time and work reports on personnel in assigned crew.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power landscaping tools and equipment.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Three years of experience in parks maintenance, construction, or a related field.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License issued from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Must obtain a valid Qualified Applicator Certificate prior to completion of one year.
  • Possession of Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) is highly desirable.
