About the position

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is seeking a dedicated Park Police Assistant Barn Manager to join the Montgomery County Department of Parks, Park Police Division in Silver Spring, MD. This position is essential for the daily upkeep and maintenance of the horses and barn facility within the Special Operations Section. The ideal candidate will have considerable equine skills, including handling, medical emergencies, and routine care, and must be confident in managing large horses. The Assistant Barn Manager will work under general supervision and will be responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the well-being of the police horses and the maintenance of the barn facilities. The role involves not only the care and grooming of horses but also the administration of routine and emergency medical care. Daily responsibilities include feeding, watering, grooming, and inspecting horses for injuries, as well as administering medications and ensuring that all medical needs are met. The Assistant Barn Manager will also assist in preparing horses for patrol and community events, working closely with both sworn and non-sworn employees to support public safety efforts. In addition to horse care, the position requires maintaining the barn and surrounding areas, including cleaning and organizing the tack room, managing pasture conditions, and ensuring that all equipment is in good working order. The Assistant Barn Manager will oversee the daily work assignments of seasonal barn staff and volunteers, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. This role is vital to the overall operation of the Park Police Division and requires a dependable individual committed to excellence in their work.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily upkeep and maintenance of horses and barn facilities.
  • Ensure horses are fed and given adequate fresh water daily.
  • Brush and/or bathe horses as needed, ensuring cleanliness and grooming standards are met.
  • Inspect hooves daily for missing shoes, cracks, thrush, and stones.
  • Prepare horses for patrol and details in a timely manner, including cleaning and tacking as needed.
  • Assist police training staff with horse exercise, training, riding, groundwork, and lunging.
  • Inspect horses daily for injuries and administer necessary medical care, including medications and treatments.
  • Maintain barn cleanliness and organization, including the tack room and surrounding areas.
  • Manage pasture conditions and report any broken or unsafe structures.
  • Oversee daily work assignments of seasonal barn staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinate the re-order of barn supplies and medications as needed.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance, or semi-skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry).
  • Considerable equine skills, including handling and medical emergencies.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with State and Commission rules and regulations.
  • Ability to operate light automotive and motorized power equipment, as well as hand and power tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • At least one year of college experience preferred.
  • At least four years' experience working with horses, preferably in a lead role.
  • English as a primary language.
