About the position

The Park Ranger position at the City of Poway, CA, is a part-time role that focuses on providing exceptional customer service and park information to patrons while ensuring the safety and proper use of recreational facilities. The ranger will be responsible for enforcing rules and regulations, supporting community service programs and events, and overseeing operations at Lake Poway, including fishing, boating, and parking. This position requires patrolling and monitoring the parks using city-owned vehicles and boats, ensuring that all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Park Ranger will work under the general supervision of the Recreation Area Manager or an assigned supervisor, but will not have direct supervision over other staff members. Key responsibilities include providing customer service at assigned recreation facilities, acting as a public relations representative for the City of Poway, and assisting the public in enjoying the recreation area safely. The ranger will monitor the use of recreational facilities, patrol and inspect these areas to ensure compliance with rules, and open and secure specialized park facilities. They will also investigate reports of violations, approach the public regarding infractions, and patrol wilderness trails to ensure public safety. The role involves diffusing potentially difficult situations and communicating with the Sheriff's Department when necessary. Additionally, the Park Ranger will provide interpretive services about the parks' history, assist with volunteer program coordination, and participate in community events. They will administer basic first aid and CPR as needed, perform custodial duties, and ensure the parks are opened and closed properly. The ranger will maintain accurate logs and records of work performed and enforce safety rules while educating the public about regulations. The position requires a commitment to attendance and punctuality, as well as the ability to perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Provide responsible customer service at assigned recreation facility.
  • Represent the City of Poway in public interactions regarding recreation areas.
  • Monitor the proper and safe use of recreational facilities by the public.
  • Patrol and inspect recreational facilities to ensure adherence to rules and ordinances.
  • Open and secure specialized park facilities and ensure parks are opened and closed at designated times.
  • Investigate reports of violations regarding Federal, State, and local rules and regulations.
  • Approach the public regarding infractions of rules and patrol wilderness trails for safety.
  • Diffuse potentially difficult situations and communicate with the Sheriff's Department when needed.
  • Provide park interpretive services, including history and outreach to organizations.
  • Assist dock attendants with enforcing boat safety rules and checking permits.
  • Assist with volunteer program coordination and supervise volunteers.
  • Participate in community events, including setting up and taking down tables and chairs.
  • Monitor reservations of recreation facilities and provide assistance to reservation groups.
  • Administer basic first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Perform basic custodial duties and minor facility maintenance as assigned.
  • Respond to patrons' needs for assistance or information.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of work performed and materials used.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience dealing with the public and customer service.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
  • A valid Class C driver's license is required.
  • Must possess or obtain a California PC832 certificate within six months of appointment.
