About the position

The City of Eugene is seeking a dedicated individual to join the Parks and Open Space Division as a Park Specialist 1/2. This entry-level position is crucial for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of Eugene's extensive parks and natural areas, which encompass over 3000 acres of natural spaces, 50,000 street trees, and 60 developed parks. The role primarily involves cleaning up litter, debris, and graffiti, as well as assisting in the removal of illegal structures from park properties. The successful candidate will demonstrate qualities such as resilience, compassion, diligence, and dependability in their daily tasks. This position is funded through a levy and offers a unique opportunity to work outdoors in a collaborative and rewarding team environment. The Park Specialist will be responsible for various activities, including addressing cleanup efforts related to illegal camping, litter, and graffiti. They will work closely with the Eugene Police, Park Ambassadors, and community members to ensure compliance with park rules and maintain the integrity of the park system. The role also includes documenting work using cameras and GIS software, performing maintenance on park infrastructure, and engaging in natural area operations such as vegetation removal and trail maintenance. The position requires participation in a two-year cross-training program, allowing employees to rotate through different operational crews within the Parks and Open Space Division, ultimately leading to potential advancement to a semi-skilled or skilled Park Specialist 2 level.

Responsibilities

  • Clean up litter, debris, and graffiti in parks and natural areas.
  • Assist in the removal of illegal structures on park property.
  • Work with Eugene Police and Park Ambassadors to ensure compliance with park rules.
  • Document work using cameras, GIS, and maintenance management software.
  • Perform maintenance on park fixtures such as benches, tables, and restrooms.
  • Engage in natural area operations including vegetation removal and trail maintenance.
  • Maintain and repair park infrastructure and janitorial duties.
  • Perform turf management duties including mowing and irrigation system maintenance.
  • Respond to emergency situations and perform storm response duties.

Requirements

  • One year of manual work experience in custodial, grounds keeping, or natural area maintenance.
  • Valid Oregon driver's license or ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Class 'A' commercial driver's license within one year of hire.
  • Flagger certification and possibly a Pesticide Applicator License.
  • Basic knowledge of park maintenance principles and practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS software.
