About the position

The Park Superintendent I position is a management training role within the Arkansas State Parks system, designed to equip successful candidates with the necessary skills and knowledge to oversee park operations effectively. This position involves comprehensive training in various aspects of park management, including facility management, general park maintenance, visitor information center administration, interpretation, and law enforcement. The training will take place at various state parks, with housing provided to trainees. The emphasis will be on managing parks that include lodging and restaurant facilities, ensuring that trainees gain hands-on experience in a real-world environment. During the training, candidates will be responsible for identifying and performing tasks related to park operations, maintaining park records, and handling accounting and bookkeeping functions. They will also prepare weekly reports and supervise employees, which will help them develop leadership skills essential for future management roles. Each phase of the training will require candidates to pass tests that assess their readiness for management positions within the Arkansas State Parks system. Additionally, candidates must undergo a criminal background check and a driver's record check as part of the hiring process. The Park Superintendent I will oversee specific portions of a large park, managing a small team of regular and seasonal staff. Responsibilities include preparing and managing the park budget, monitoring daily expenditures, and scheduling work hours to prevent overspending. The role also involves participating in planning teams to develop or expand park programs and facilities, ensuring that operational goals are met. The successful candidate will be expected to lead search and rescue operations, administer emergency first aid, and make public presentations to promote park facilities and events. This position is governed by state and federal laws, as well as agency policies, ensuring compliance and safety in all park operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a small staff of regular and seasonal employees, including interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating performance.
  • Oversee the operation of specific park facilities such as boat rental facilities, visitor information centers, and snack bars.
  • Prepare and manage the park budget, monitoring daily expenditures and scheduling work hours to prevent overspending.
  • Participate in planning teams to develop or expand park programs and facilities, and monitor operations to ensure goals are met.
  • Develop operating plans and schedules for year-round operations, including maintenance schedules and special events.
  • Assist Emergency Services with scheduling and job assignments for law enforcement staff.
  • Participate in or lead search and rescue teams and administer emergency first aid as needed.
  • Compile and maintain records and reports, including financial records and incident reports.
  • Interpret and monitor the maintenance or development of natural, cultural, and historic research sites.
  • Make public presentations regarding park facilities and operations to promote Arkansas State Parks.

Requirements

  • Formal educational equivalent of a bachelor's degree in park administration, parks and recreation management, natural science, recreation administration, or a related field.
  • One year of experience in park management, including six months in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • Ability to prepare, review, and analyze financial data and reports.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures, state and federal laws governing park operations, and public safety practices.

Nice-to-haves
