About the position

The Park Support Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks related to the upkeep of buildings, equipment, and grounds within the parks and recreation areas. This role involves working both independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision, and may include leading less experienced maintenance employees. The position requires a proactive approach to maintenance and repair tasks, as well as the ability to respond to emergencies and perform on-call duties as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the general maintenance and upkeep of the buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Performs minor repairs to facility equipment and structures that do not require a license or certificate.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks on site-specific equipment, including oil changes and cleaning.
  • Assists in projects related to grounds and turf maintenance, including mowing, fertilizing, and trimming.
  • Constructs and fabricates structural park features such as shelters and benches.
  • Performs light carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and painting tasks.
  • Landscapes grounds, gardens, and trails, including planting and pruning.
  • Installs, inspects, and maintains playground equipment to industry standards.
  • Cleans and stocks restrooms, ensuring sanitation and hygiene.
  • Collects and manages leaves and debris, and clears storm drains.
  • Repairs washouts and performs storm damage cleanup.
  • Cleans snow and ice from roads and walkways.
  • Loads and hauls materials, dirt, and debris.
  • Identifies and removes fallen or hazardous trees.
  • Assists with event and department program operations, including setup and cleanup.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a grounds maintenance worker.
  • Completion of accredited trades training course at the apprentice level or equivalent training and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license; Commercial Driver's License may be required.
  • PA Department of Agriculture pesticide license and Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification may be required.

Nice-to-haves

  • General knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment of the parks department.
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance terminology, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to analyze problems and demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with the public and staff.
