About the position

The Parking Enforcement Officer for the Downtown Development Authority is responsible for enforcing parking ordinances in public streets, city-owned parking lots, and commercial areas. This role involves operating a parking enforcement vehicle, responding to parking complaints, and exercising independent judgment under the supervision of the Ordinance Enforcement Coordinator. The officer must demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to work in various weather conditions while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Operate parking ordinance enforcement vehicle to patrol public streets and parking areas.
  • Enforce parking ordinances and respond to related parking complaints.
  • Conduct daily enforcement of public service day parking ordinance and city code.
  • Prepare written and computer reports and records.
  • Make regular rounds on foot or by vehicle as assigned.
  • Handle disputed tickets and assist with payment processing.
  • Train others on daily functions and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of dismissed tickets and meter issues.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Driver's License with an excellent driving record.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Prior law enforcement, inspection, or security-related public contact experience.
  • Ability to operate a city vehicle safely and obey traffic laws.
  • Strong verbal skills to communicate with a diverse public.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with MPS Parking websites and mobile app.
  • Familiarity with handling cash and deposits.
