About the position

The Parks Maintenance Worker I is responsible for the maintenance and repair of parks, trails, and athletic fields within the Parks and Recreation Department. This role focuses on infield maintenance for County-owned ball fields and includes various tasks such as field preparation, equipment operation, and public interaction. The position requires reliable attendance and may involve working nights and weekends during scheduled events.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily maintenance and repair of parks, trails, and athletic fields.
  • Focus on infield maintenance including lips, mounds, bases, and batters' boxes.
  • Independently maintain park projects and fieldwork.
  • Prepare fields for activities, including restroom cleanup and sports complex cleaning.
  • Collect litter and garbage from park properties and trails.
  • Maintain tools and equipment through regular cleaning and basic repairs.
  • Operate various equipment such as mowers, blowers, and hand tools.
  • Prepare athletic fields according to specifications for scheduled programs and events.
  • Operate and assist in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Enforce park regulations and respond to public inquiries.
  • Inspect grounds and facilities for safety concerns and maintenance needs.
  • Assist with minor repairs to buildings and structures as time allows.
  • Perform basic maintenance activities within trail corridors and park properties.
  • Monitor trail and hardscape conditions and plan for necessary renovations.
  • Support management of park and natural resource lands during operations.
  • Assist with facility rentals and care as needed.
  • Collect and compile necessary paperwork and forms.
  • Complete required trainings and obtain certifications.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; some related experience or equivalent training.
  • Minimum 1-year grounds/parks maintenance experience required.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license in Virginia.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications (must be acquired within 6 months of employment).
  • Completion of IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous training and education in parks, trails, or athletic field maintenance preferred.
  • Knowledge of turf care for various sports and special athletic field needs preferred.
  • Skills and knowledge of irrigation and drainage systems operation, care, repairs, and installation preferred.
