About the position

The Parks Superintendent I position is responsible for the management and supervision of Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, ensuring public safety and effective park operations. This role involves overseeing various aspects of park management, including environmental education, natural resource management, law enforcement, and public relations. The superintendent will coordinate activities with local agencies, manage the park budget, and develop programs and events to enhance visitor experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage park units and provide public safety services with limited staff.
  • Plan, direct, manage, and supervise all aspects of day-to-day park operations.
  • Represent the park and the division, interacting with local governments, businesses, and the public.
  • Coordinate recreation, resource management, and emergency service activities with public safety agencies.
  • Manage and monitor rare species and prevent encroachments of park boundaries.
  • Present interpretive programs to various audiences.
  • Develop and manage special events while overseeing the park's natural resources.
  • Develop and manage the park budget.
  • Plan short-range goals and objectives.
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, development, coaching, counseling, disciplining, and evaluation of employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Natural Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Three years of experience in a relevant area of assignment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Emergency Medical Responder and CPR Certification.
  • Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR), ICS-100, 200, 300 certifications.
  • Wild Land Fire Suppression Certifications and Certified in S212 Chainsaw Operations Training.

  • Experience in law enforcement concepts and practices.
  • Experience interpreting laws, rules, and regulations affecting public programs.
  • Experience coordinating law enforcement activities with other agencies.
  • Experience evaluating and allocating resources and overseeing budgets.
