About the position

The Parole Officer position with the State of Indiana involves supervising and supporting parolees as they transition from incarceration to community living. This role is crucial for enhancing public safety through community-based supervision and services, requiring the officer to assess and monitor the well-being of parolees while ensuring compliance with parole conditions. The position is based in Indianapolis and demands a commitment to community engagement and rehabilitation efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Complete an initial Risk Assessment and a Re-entry Accountability Plan on each offender.
  • Maintain and provide accurate electronic and written records concerning all aspects of the supervision of assigned parolees.
  • Communicate with parolees and complete subsequent case notes as required.
  • Monitor a parolee's movement, housing, employment, and other services.
  • Provide counseling services to offenders transitioning back into the community.
  • Promote and develop community resources for offender programs and treatment.
  • Conduct community-based investigations for clemency and parole, including parole violations.
  • Serve as an expert witness/subject matter expert in various legal proceedings and hearings.
  • Hold probable cause hearings and administer drug/alcohol screenings to offenders.
  • Respond to emergency contacts on a 24 hour/7 days per week basis.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) required.
  • Two (2) years of full-time professional experience in criminal justice, correctional counseling, criminology, parole/probation work, law enforcement, social work, or a related area.
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings.
  • Must qualify for and maintain firearm certification and carry a firearm in the performance of duties.
  • Broad knowledge of the laws, rules, departmental policy, and procedures concerning the supervision of paroled offenders.
  • Working knowledge of community-based resources to aid in the parolee's transition.
  • Extensive problem-solving abilities as it relates to case management.
  • Ability to accurately assess an offender's risk level and report signs of illness and inappropriate behavior.
  • Ability to conduct thorough and accurate investigations into a parolee's activities.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with parolees, their families, and local officials.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
