About the position

The Part-Time Animal Shelter Worker position is designed to support the operations of the Animal Shelter by maintaining, organizing, and coordinating various shelter activities. This role is crucial in providing a full range of animal shelter services, which include the impounding, treatment, and humane disposition of animals. Under the direction of management, the worker will participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the shelter. This includes training part-time and temporary personnel, volunteers, and community service workers, as well as assisting in staff training and addressing any deficiencies in performance. The worker will also be responsible for responding to public inquiries and concerns, ensuring that the community is well-informed about animal care and control ordinances. In addition to training and public education, the Animal Shelter Worker will identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures, collaborating with management to implement necessary improvements. The role requires explaining ordinances related to animal care to the public, issuing citations for violations, and appearing in court to testify as needed. The worker will also transport animals to veterinarians for treatment and provide necessary care for all impounded animals, including administering medical treatment and euthanizing animals when required. The position demands a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for both animals and staff, which includes performing minor repairs to vehicles and equipment as needed. Overall, this position is vital for ensuring the welfare of animals in the shelter and promoting responsible pet ownership within the community. Responsibilities

  • Maintain, organize, and coordinate shelter activities related to animal services.
  • Train part-time and temporary personnel, volunteers, and community service workers.
  • Assist in providing or coordinating staff training and addressing performance deficiencies.
  • Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and implement improvements.
  • Explain ordinances related to animal care to the public.
  • Issue citations for violations of animal control licensing ordinances and City codes as needed.
  • Transport animals to veterinarians for observation or treatment.
  • Provide necessary care and treatment for all impounded animals.
  • Clean and perform minor repairs to assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Attend meetings and respond to related questions and complaints.
  • Provide public education regarding animal control ordinances.
  • Administer shots and medical treatment to animals under veterinary guidance.
  • Euthanize animals using approved methods.

Requirements

  • One year of responsible experience performing duties equivalent to an Animal Shelter Worker.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college-level coursework in animal science, zoology, or a related field.
  • Ability to obtain Euthanasia Certification recognized by the State of Nevada within one year.
  • Possession of a CPR/First Aid Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with various breeds of domestic pets.
  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of animal care, diseases, treatment, and prevention.
  • Familiarity with animal shelter tools and equipment.
