About the position

WCVB NewsCenter 5 is seeking a part-time Assignment Editor to join their competitive news-gathering team. This role is essential for bringing fresh ideas to Hearst Television's legacy Boston station, involving weekday and weekend desk shifts along with occasional vacation and holiday coverage. The Assignment Editor will utilize best practices during breaking news, manage viewer outreach, and focus on finding distinctive enterprise stories that set the station apart.

Responsibilities

• Listening to multiple police scanners covering various agencies throughout the market.
• Gathering and organizing press releases; responding to emails, phone calls, and viewer tips.
• Leading the prioritization of content for newscasts based on gathered information.
• Assisting news managers with long-term planning.
• Assisting producers, digital editors, and reporters with content gathering.
• Maintaining communication with multiple field crews.
• Posting content to all digital platforms, including the WCVB website, app, and social media outlets.

Requirements

• Familiarity with local newsgathering technology and terminology, including video transfer platforms.
• Advanced knowledge of digital platforms, especially social media.
• Familiarity with police scanner communication is preferred.
• Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to foster and maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers.
• Sense of urgency and ability to thrive in a high-pressure breaking news environment.
• Ability to remain calm and level-headed under pressure.
• Television, digital, or print newsroom experience preferred, including internships.
