About the position

The Part-Time Career Advisor at Germanna Community College plays a crucial role in assisting high school students and their families in preparing for career training or post-secondary education. This position involves planning and executing outreach and career education activities, serving as a liaison between the college and local high schools, and providing guidance on enrollment and career opportunities. The Career Advisor will work closely with various departments and community organizations to facilitate student recruitment and support educational pathways.

Responsibilities

  • Assist high school students and families in preparing for career training or post-secondary education.
  • Plan and execute outreach and career education activities at a service area high school.
  • Facilitate a one-stop service for students from application to enrollment in courses at Germanna Community College.
  • Coordinate on-campus tours, enrollment programs, and college and career-oriented activities for prospective students and their families.
  • Maintain a case management system to report outcomes to the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the College.
  • Support Dual Enrollment and Independent Dual Enrollment students in identifying educational opportunities.
  • Assist in the recruitment, enrollment, and registration of new and continuing students.
  • Collaborate with Career & Transfer Services, community organizations, and local employers to identify Work-Based Learning opportunities.

Requirements

  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Extensive computer experience with familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and database software tools.
  • Extensive customer service experience with the ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • A valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout the service area.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of career assessments and career and educational pathway planning.
  • Knowledge of K-12 and/or higher education enrollment services, academic advising, career advising, or counseling.
  • Ability to understand and interpret college policies and academic placement procedures.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to advise and assist students with career and academic decision making.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with school personnel, community representatives, and employers.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely record keeping and reporting.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn artificial intelligence tools.
  • Commitment to working with diverse colleagues, students, and community members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience using Student Information System.
  • Experience in college admissions, counseling, and academic advising.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
