About the position

The Part-Time Catering Assistant Manager at Indiana University is a pivotal role within the IU Dining and Hospitality department, dedicated to providing exceptional culinary and service experiences for various events, including fine dining, weddings, receptions, and other campus gatherings. This position involves a blend of management, administration, and production activities related to IU Catering events and operations. The Catering Assistant Manager is responsible for hiring, scheduling, and supervising part-time staff, ensuring that all employees adhere to the highest standards of guest service and operational efficiency. In this role, the Catering Assistant Manager will work closely with the Catering Area Manager and other Catering Managers to oversee inventory control, guest service, and the coordination of special events and conferences. The individual will also assist with brand management and represent the Catering management team in the absence of the Catering Manager or other Assistant Managers. This position requires a hands-on approach, as the Catering Assistant Manager will work alongside front-line staff to meet operational needs during busy periods or when short-staffed. The responsibilities may vary, encompassing a range of tasks related to people leadership, event management, and purchasing/production, or may focus on specific areas based on operational requirements. The role demands a strong commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety and personal hygiene, as well as effective communication skills to ensure smooth operations and exceptional guest experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management and administration of IU Catering events and operations.
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise part-time staff, including assisting in the corrective action process.
  • Provide exceptional guest service and oversee the execution of events.
  • Work with the Catering Area Manager and Catering Managers on inventory control and guest service.
  • Represent the Catering management team in the absence of the Catering Manager or other Assistant Managers.
  • Work alongside front-line staff to meet operational needs during high-volume service periods.
  • Assist with brand management and coordination of special events and conferences.

Requirements

  • General knowledge at the high school level.
  • 1 year of food service supervisory experience.
  • Food Safety (ServSafe Manager) certification within 180 days from date of hire.
  • Knowledge of institutional food preparation equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and practice of department standards for personal hygiene, health and safety, and uniform wear.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and read and interpret recipes, worksheets, and menus.
  • Strong communication skills.
