About the position

WKBN 27 First News is seeking an enthusiastic and aspiring capital "J" journalist who is passionate about storytelling and community engagement. This Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) position offers a unique opportunity for students currently pursuing their undergraduate degree to gain invaluable real-world experience at a leading commercial broadcast station. The role requires the MMJ to work at least two shifts per week from our main studios located in Youngstown, Ohio, a vibrant area situated between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. This position is designed to foster both professional and personal growth within a supportive newsroom environment where collaboration and teamwork are highly valued. As an MMJ, you will be responsible for creating both live and prerecorded stories for three network affiliates, as well as the market's leading digital news platforms. The role demands versatility, as MMJs are expected to shoot, edit, write, and produce content that resonates with our audience. You will be actively involved in community activities, ensuring that your reporting reflects the interests and concerns of local residents. Our newsroom broadcasts a total of 11 hours of live news each weekday and 4.5 hours on weekends, providing ample opportunities for you to showcase your storytelling skills. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, the ability to multitask, and the capability to troubleshoot effectively under pressure to meet tight deadlines. You will be encouraged to generate enterprising story ideas and cultivate sources that enhance your reporting. In summary, this position involves researching, writing, capturing visual content, editing scripts and videos, and presenting general assignment stories across multiple platforms. You will collaborate with management to develop and enterprise stories daily, utilizing dynamic live shots, creative graphics, and various digital and social media platforms to engage our audience. Your role will also include organizing material, determining the angle or emphasis of stories, and adhering to prescribed editorial style and format standards. Additionally, you will gather and verify factual information through interviews, observations, and research, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of your reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Produce content for multiple platforms, including TV, internet, and mobile.
  • Work with management to enterprise and develop stories on a daily basis.
  • Demonstrate compelling storytelling using dynamic live shots and stand-ups, creative graphics, and digital and social media platforms.
  • Organize material, determine angle or emphasis, and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interviews, observation, and research.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate editorial judgment using knowledge of journalism ethics and libel laws.
  • Solid vocal delivery, camera presence, and clear enunciation.
  • Strong newsgathering skills.
  • Strong on-air reporting, writing, and technical skills.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Conflict management skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work efficiently under pressure.
