About the position

The Gallery Attendant at the Saint Louis Art Museum plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the museum's staff, visitors, collections, and overall environment. This part-time position requires the attendant to be vigilant and proactive in preventing theft, fire, vandalism, and other potential hazards. The attendant will be responsible for observing the gallery, maintaining a presence that deters misconduct, and ensuring that all museum policies are adhered to by both staff and visitors. In addition to monitoring the gallery, the attendant will participate in roll-call prior to their shift, where they will receive information regarding their assignments for the day. Training in emergency procedures is mandatory, and the attendant must comply with all general orders, policies, and procedures set forth by the museum. The role also involves making suggestions and conveying observations to supervisors, as well as providing directions and answering questions from visitors. The attendant will be required to maintain a neat personal appearance and adhere to uniform specifications. They will also engage in light custodial work as needed and may be required to lift or carry items as part of their duties. The position may involve working overtime as necessary, and the attendant will be expected to perform other related duties as assigned by their supervisor. Light computer use is also part of the job, primarily for accessing emails and work schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Attend roll-call prior to shift for inspection and assignment; receive information pertaining to assignment of the day.
  • Participate in training in emergency procedures.
  • Comply with general orders, policies and procedures.
  • Make suggestions, convey observations and acquired information to supervisor.
  • Firmly yet politely advise Museum staff and visitors of Museum policies.
  • Give directions and answer questions.
  • Constantly move through assigned area or observe from an assigned stationary location.
  • Maintain a neat personal appearance and meet uniform specifications.
  • Perform in drills and respond to emergencies as required by Museum policies and procedures.
  • Perform light custodial work as required for daily assignment.
  • May be required to lift or carry items as part of this task.
  • Shall be required to work overtime as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Light computer use to obtain email and schedules for work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Training in emergency procedures is required.
  • Must be able to deal with Museum staff and visitors in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Prior museum experience is helpful.
  • Must be dedicated to duty, possess good judgment and discretion, while being diligent in the performance of responsibilities.
  • Attendance must be reliable and punctual.
