About the position

The Part-Time Graphic Designer I at Lone Star College System is responsible for designing and creating graphics that align with the college's brand standards while meeting the needs of various customers. This role involves utilizing a variety of tools and mediums to produce artistic and decorative products, as well as visual solutions for communications. The designer will guide student workers on assigned projects and ensure that advertising materials are kept current across campus and external locations. In this position, the Graphic Designer will meet with the creative services manager to receive direction and develop layouts based on customer needs. Responsibilities include designing graphics for a range of projects such as brochures, flyers, newsletters, handbooks, maps, posters, and advertisements for both digital and print media. The designer will create draft layouts using traditional sketches and computer software, manipulate and optimize final graphic materials, and coordinate with print vendors and content editors for production. Additionally, the designer will produce original artwork for logos and illustrations, consult with the creative services manager to prepare quotes and contracts, and oversee the work of specialty vendors. The role also involves planning and executing photography sessions, setting up photography equipment, and capturing images of special events or activities on campus. This position requires a detail-oriented, team player who is technologically savvy and possesses strong customer service skills.

Responsibilities

  • Guide student workers on assigned projects.
  • Keep advertising materials current on campus and external locations.
  • Meet with the creative services manager for direction and develop layouts for assignments based on customer needs.
  • Design graphics for assigned projects, including brochures, flyers, newsletters, handbooks, maps, posters, and advertisements.
  • Create draft layouts using traditional sketches and computer software for customer review and selection.
  • Manipulate and optimize final graphic materials for print and online marketing.
  • Produce original art for logos and illustrations using Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Consult with the creative services manager and prepare quotes, bid specifications, and contracts.
  • Coordinate the distribution of print materials and quality control campus wide and at external locations.
  • Plan, schedule, and execute photography sessions as needed per project/assignment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Detail-oriented and team player.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Publisher.
  • Knowledge of professional printing processes and pre-press production.
  • Familiarity with PC and MAC graphic design software.
  • Knowledge of design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and HTML.
  • Flexibility with prioritizing deadlines and managing expectations.
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology and acquire new skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Nice-to-haves
