About the position

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at the University of California, Irvine is seeking part-time instructors for its E-Learning Instructional Design Certificate Program. This role involves creating an engaging online learning environment for students and is contracted on a course-by-course basis. Instructors will be responsible for developing course materials, delivering online instruction, and evaluating student performance. This position is not a faculty role and is designed for individuals with current industry knowledge and experience in e-learning instructional design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and/or update course syllabi in consultation with the UCI DCE academic unit.
  • Prepare and deliver online course materials and learning assessments.
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform.
  • Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students.
  • Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes and assign grades.
  • Post final student grades to the transcript system by set deadlines.
  • Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
  • Handle student inquiries about final grades and consult with the academic unit as needed.
  • Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice.
  • Participate in required orientations and complete mandatory training programs.
  • Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner.
  • Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies in the classroom.
  • Allow students to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months following the last class session.
  • Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to engage participants.
  • Update materials periodically and monitor course evaluations for improvements.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Extensive background and current work experience in the e-learning instructional design industry.
  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) the use of instructional technology and online teaching tools.
  • Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in subject area.
  • Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills.
  • Current participation in professional associations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience designing/revising curriculum and measuring student performance.
  • College-level teaching experience (or the corporate equivalent).
  • Experience teaching online.
