About The Position

The Part-Time Patient Care Technician on the 5A Oncology Unit is responsible for providing exceptional patient care and supporting nursing staff in a collaborative environment. This role is crucial for ensuring a safe and comfortable atmosphere for patients, while also being a valued step in UPMC's Patient Care Support Career Ladder.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, OR enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in line with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • Report equipment malfunctions.
  • Establish effective communication strategies.
  • Maintain professional and respectful relationships.
  • Assist with unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, monitor vital signs, and assist with patient care equipment.
  • Maintain a safe and organized environment.
  • Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment.
  • Communicate clearly with the healthcare team.
  • Understand cultural diversity and support workplace safety.
  • Develop productive working relationships and demonstrate accountability.
  • Provide direct patient care as directed by the RN.
  • Ensure patient safety and cleanliness.
  • Deliver patient nourishments and mail.
  • Provide diversional activities and document in medical records.
  • Complete clerical functions and comply with safety policies.
  • Respond to emergent situations and provide companionship as needed.
  • Support departmental changes and assume responsibility for assignments.
