About the position

The Department of Drama at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University is seeking several part-time Production Facilities Staff members to work evening and weekend shifts at its facilities located at 721 Broadway and/or 181 Mercer Street. This role is temporary and part-time, requiring individuals to supervise, coordinate, and monitor the operations of the Drama Department's theater and rehearsal spaces. The staff will ensure compliance with all applicable policies, including safety, health, and space usage regulations. Additionally, they will assist in the maintenance and operation of the facilities, performing small repairs and reporting larger issues to NYU's maintenance department. The staff will also assist in supervising the load-in and strikes of student productions, providing technical guidance regarding construction and installation. Candidates should possess a basic knowledge of accepted theatrical lighting, scenery, and sound fabrication and installation practices, although this is preferred and not required. Effective communication skills are essential, as staff will interact with a diverse audience, including students and members of the public. A professional, courteous, and helpful demeanor is expected. Prior experience in an educational environment is beneficial. The position requires availability for 15-20 hours per week, primarily during the following time frames: Monday to Friday from 5 PM to 11 PM, and Saturday to Sunday from 9 AM to 4 PM and 4 PM to 11 PM. The salary for this position is set at $22.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coordinate, and schedule studio and theater operations during weeknights and weekends for the Department of Drama.
  • Enforce all policies regarding health, safety, and space usage in the Department of Drama.
  • Assist Production Managers and Administrators to identify, establish, and maintain policies guiding the safe and efficient use of theater and rehearsal/classroom space.
  • Make recommendations for repairs and upgrades.
  • Coordinate with NYU cleaning contractors and building management as required.
  • Perform small maintenance and general housekeeping duties.
  • Enforce building hours as established by the Department of Drama.
  • Ensure that spaces are left neat and tidy at the end of the day.
  • Interact in a courteous and professional manner with Faculty, Students, Staff, and Guests.
  • Serve as Production Resource Office contact for all stage managers and house managers for Drama Department productions.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of accepted theatrical lighting, scenery, and sound fabrication and installation practices is preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate clear, appropriate, and effective communication with a diverse audience.
  • Professional, courteous, and helpful demeanor is required.
  • Prior experience in an educational environment is helpful.
  • Must be capable of physically carrying/moving furniture, scenery, and building materials as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • General carpentry experience is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of theatrical lighting and sound systems.
