About the position

The Teacher for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing is responsible for instructing deaf and hard-of-hearing pupils in a classroom setting, adapting the regular curriculum to meet the unique needs of these students. This role involves developing lesson plans, utilizing specialized equipment, and communicating effectively through sign and spoken language to facilitate learning and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements lesson plans
  • Utilizes technical and specialized equipment for students with hearing loss
  • Prepares lessons that accommodate various learning styles
  • Communicates using sign/spoken language as appropriate
  • Assists in the selection of instructional materials and equipment
  • Provides training to students or staff to facilitate learning and independence
  • Assesses student learning styles and plans educational activities accordingly
  • Conducts assessments of student progress and achievement
  • Compiles reports, records, and documents as required
  • Participates in IEP meetings with parents, teachers, and other staff

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university preferred
  • Valid state teaching certificate as required by state regulations
  • Knowledge in Sign Language and amplification devices for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
  • Experience with deaf and hard-of-hearing students preferred
  • ASL proficiency exam or Certification may be required
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
  • Current CPR certification if applicable
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
  • Current Health certificate as per contract or state regulation
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and clients
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Nice-to-haves
