Part Time Telecommunicator

About the position

The Telecommunicator position at Harris County ESD 11 is a part-time role responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency calls related to medical situations. Under the guidance of the dispatch supervisor, the Telecommunicator operates various communication equipment to relay critical information to emergency response teams. This role is essential for ensuring public safety and requires a high level of focus and emotional stability in high-stress situations.

Responsibilities

• Receive and dispatch calls for EMS units effectively.
• Utilize the Medical Priority Dispatch System to assess caller needs and determine appropriate responses.
• Relay information between emergency sites and response agencies.
• Ensure compliance with IAED Code of Ethics.
• Operate various technology systems including CAD and public safety radio systems.
• Provide medical pre-arrival instructions as per emergency protocols.
• Maintain accurate records in the CAD system, including critical safety information.
• Interact professionally with field units and provide excellent customer service.
• Monitor and report field performance concerns to supervisors.
• Attend meetings and assist in decision-making processes.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Current AEMD certification or ability to obtain within three months.
• CPR Certification.
• Ability to type at least 35 words per minute.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks under stress while maintaining accuracy.
• Experience with map books and following written/verbal instructions.

Nice-to-haves

• One year of experience as a public safety Telecommunicator/operator in a high-performance EMS system.
• Current AEMD and CPR Certification.
