About the position

The Passenger Service Agent is responsible for operating a computerized reservation system to manage travel bookings, sell tickets, and provide customer service to passengers. This role involves coordinating travel plans, handling payments, and ensuring timely departures of trains while maintaining confidentiality and accuracy in transactions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service by greeting customers and assisting with travel plans.
  • Coordinate individual bookings by determining travel dates and destinations.
  • Make travel reservations using a computerized reservation system.
  • Collect payment by credit card and maintain confidentiality of credit card information.
  • Print and issue tickets and process refunds.
  • Prepare conductors manifest and notify seat assignments.
  • Answer inquiries regarding passenger fares, baggage allowances, and tour information.
  • Compile daily balanced sales transaction reports and submit them to the Accounting Manager.
  • Safeguard tickets and all monies collected from ticket sales.
  • Coordinate station activities to ensure timely train departures.
  • Respond to Internet and fax inquiries and requests for brochures.
  • Assist in special promotional mailings and other projects.
  • Prepare conductor's bag consisting of manifest, cash bank, tickets, etc.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year verifiable front-line customer service experience.
  • Ability to work irregular work schedules, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to type 30 wpm.
  • Skill in operating a computerized reservation system and office equipment such as a 10-key machine, fax, and copier.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to handle money and make change under pressure.
  • Must be people-oriented.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year experience in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Prior experience in the travel, tourism, or hotel industry is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of reservation procedures, basic accounting procedures, and passenger and baggage tariffs is helpful.
