About the position

The Pathologist Assistant in Anatomical Pathology at UT Southwestern plays a crucial role in supporting surgical pathologists by preparing, describing, and dissecting human tissue surgical specimens. This position involves specialized training and responsibilities that assist in the handling of surgical specimens, including grossing functions, frozen section procedures, and participation in quality assurance activities. The role also includes teaching and training residents and fellows, ensuring a collaborative and educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation, gross description, and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens.
  • Assuring appropriate specimen accessioning and obtaining pertinent clinical information.
  • Describing gross anatomic features of surgical specimens and preparing tissues for histological processing.
  • Obtaining biological samples for studies such as flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry.
  • Preparing and submitting tissue sections for light microscopy and special procedures.
  • Photographing appropriate specimens and microscopic slides.
  • Assisting pathologists in gross and microscopic examination of surgical and autopsy specimens.
  • Training new residents in autopsy and surgical gross dissections under faculty supervision.
  • Coordinating patient care and teaching conferences.
  • Maintaining banks of fixed frozen tissues and databases of specimens and teaching materials.
  • Developing best practices for surgical pathology specimen processing and quality control programs.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree as Pathologists' Assistant certification or eligible for certification by a recognized accrediting agency.
  • New graduates must be within four months of expected graduation and in good standing with their accredited program.
  • Ability to successfully pass PA Certification exam within the first 90 days of hire.
