About the position
The Pathologists' Assistant provides anatomic pathology services under the supervision of a pathologist, assisting in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection and postmortem examinations. This role involves obtaining biological specimens, preparing surgical specimens for examination, performing postmortem examinations, and ensuring proper specimen handling and documentation.
Responsibilities
- Obtain biological specimens for analysis and perform special procedures as directed by the pathologist.
- Prepare human surgical specimens for gross description and dissection, including describing gross anatomic features and preparing tissue for histological examination.
- Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and obtain clinical history and photographs of specimens as directed by pathologist(s).
- Perform postmortem examinations, including external examinations, organ inspections, evisceration, and dictation of data.
- Select and prepare gross tissue sections for frozen section analysis and photograph relevant specimens.
- Gather and organize clinical information for completion of autopsy reports and ascertain proper legal authorization for autopsies.
- Notify relevant authorities prior to dissections and coordinate special requests for specimen sampling.
- Release bodies to the correct mortuary following proper restoration and indicating any biohazards present.
- Supervise the work of laboratory techs and assistants as needed and confer with pathologists on necessary techniques and procedures.
- Maintain equipment, provide adequate supplies, and ensure cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, allied health sciences, or a related field.
- Pathologist's Assistant Certificate within 6 months of hire.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated analytic and diagnostic reasoning skills.
- Knowledge of PC applications.
Nice-to-haves
- Minimum one (1) year of prior Pathologist Assistant experience preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
