About the position

The position involves working under the supervision of a pathologist to prepare surgical specimens for examination, dictate test results, and operate photographic equipment. The role requires performing gross dissection, dictation, microscopic examination, and assisting with histology preparation of specimens, all while adhering to established guidelines and maintaining a patient-centered approach.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately processes surgical pathology specimens including properly fixing, cutting, photographing, and sectioning of surgical specimens.
  • Writes and maintains procedures of section in compliance with CAP guidelines.
  • Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
  • Follows established guidelines for troubleshooting instrument, reagent or specimen problems.
  • Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety.
  • Participates in staff meetings and helps promote effective working relationships.
  • Uses Patient/Family center values and conducts all work activities with respect for the rights and wishes of patients, visitors, and patients' families.
  • Monitors Copath interfaces for proper performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology and successful completion of an accredited Pathologist's Assistant program.
  • Three to six months job-related experience to become familiar with a variety of procedures, techniques, and equipment used in performing activities.
  • Professional knowledge and high level of analytical ability to perform postmortem and tissue examinations, interpret findings, and determine data to be forwarded to the pathologist.
  • Knowledge of anatomic pathology computer system functions.
  • Ability to conduct gross dissection procedures utilizing surgical instruments.
