About The Position

The Pathology Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the pathology department by preparing the autopsy room and assisting with autopsy procedures. This full-time position requires attention to detail and the ability to manage pathology specimens efficiently to facilitate the work of pathologists and residents.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
• Two (2) years of laboratory experience or patient care experience.

Nice To Haves

• Current student seeking a higher educational degree or certification in a science field, such as nursing, medical technology, pre-med, or related clinical field may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.

Responsibilities

• Receives and accessions pathology specimens using the HIS and LIS.
• Inventories, files, and disposes of pathology specimens.
• Organizes and loads tissue specimens on tissue processors.
• Triages frozen sections to expedite their processing.
• Handles slide and block filing.
• Retrieves tissue specimens, tissue blocks, or slides as requested by pathologists, residents, or supervisors.
• Performs and documents solution changes on tissue processors and stainers, maintaining all instruments and work areas in a clean functional condition.
• Reports any environmental or mechanical issues to Engineering or Biomed via work order.
• Prepares cytology specimens and retrieves and faxes reports to doctor offices.
