About the position

The Pathology Research Associate II at the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine will support the John P. Murtha Cancer Research Program by performing data abstraction and quality control of cancer-related data. This role involves working closely with pathology and biobanking teams to ensure data accuracy and completeness, utilizing digital histopathology systems, and maintaining project documentation. The position is integral to the operations of the Murtha Cancer Center, contributing to the advancement of military medicine and cancer research.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately perform data abstraction and/or quality control of data entered into the Data Tracking System (DTS) for the Murtha Cancer Center.
  • Identify and interpret available pathologic, surgical, radiologic, demographic, diagnostic, treatment, and survival information on patients enrolled in research protocols.
  • Perform a quality control review of retrospective and active Case Report Forms, data outputs, sample registrations, and annotations.
  • Use digital histopathology review (Aperio system) to determine case eligibility for projects within the Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCC-RP).
  • Communicate with pathology and biobanking team to resolve errors, recommend preventive actions, and develop SOPs for process improvement.
  • Maintain databases and/or project documents and records for special projects and collaborations in support of the MCC-RP.
  • Develop and maintain reports to support operations and provide updates to Leadership.
  • Perform other data entry, quality control, and management activities as required by the protocol.
  • Work closely with the Data Team at Murtha Cancer Center to establish business rules and resolve issues associated with data entry.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience required.
  • Clinical background and/or experience and familiarity with medical terminology specific to cancer pathology and treatments, including AJCC Staging, ICD-O and ICD-10 coding, and CAP Templates in a pan-cancer setting.
  • Familiarity with using Digital Pathology systems, such as Aperio.
  • Experience with handling data in DoD environment.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Able to work with a team under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of electronic health record systems and proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and Access.
