About the position

The Pathways Student Intern position in Civil Engineering at the Department of Transportation is designed for current students to gain practical experience in the field of highway engineering. This internship provides an opportunity to work under the supervision of experienced Transportation Engineers, allowing interns to develop technical, administrative, and program management skills relevant to federal-aid program management. The role emphasizes the application of civil engineering principles and offers a mix of office and fieldwork, preparing interns for future positions within the government.

Responsibilities

• Assist experienced Transportation Engineers with various engineering tasks.
• Gain experience in the application of basic civil engineering techniques.
• Learn about FHWA's policies, programs, and procedures.
• Participate in projects related to highway funding, planning, design, and construction.
• Develop professional knowledge and skills in federal-aid program management.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen and at least 16 years of age.
• Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational institution on a half to full-time basis.
• Must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Ability to work at least 16 hours per week, preferably full-time during the summer.
• Completion of two academic years of post-high school study for GS-04 or four academic years for GS-05.
