About the position

The Patient Access Account Specialist I plays a crucial role in ensuring financial clearance for patient accounts prior to service dates. This position involves verifying insurance, obtaining authorizations, and collecting necessary patient information to facilitate smooth admissions and procedures. The specialist acts as a resource for the Patient Access team, providing exceptional customer service and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient registration processes and manage accurate collection of patient data.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits using electronic systems or direct contact with payers.
  • Educate patients about their insurance benefits and financial responsibilities.
  • Ensure accounts are financially cleared before the date of service to alleviate patient concerns.
  • Monitor work queues for financial clearance and missing authorizations.
  • Review urgent/emergent admission accounts for financial clearance and authorization pre-discharge.
  • Maintain knowledge of Medicare guidelines and payer requirements for admissions and outpatient services.
  • Provide coverage to other areas and hospitals as needed to minimize delays in patient services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; continued education preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting within Patient Access and/or billing.
  • Strong customer service background and conflict management skills.
  • Proficient in EPIC ADT system and Microsoft Office products.
  • Knowledge of insurance and financial processing of accounts.
  • Ability to pass Patient Academy with a score of 85% or higher and annual competency exams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Specialty certifications such as CHAA, CHAM, or other industry equivalent certifications preferred.
