About the position

The Patient Access Account Specialist II plays a crucial role in ensuring financial clearance for patient accounts prior to service dates. This position involves verifying insurance, obtaining authorizations, and collecting necessary patient information to facilitate smooth billing processes. The specialist acts as a subject matter expert within the Patient Access department, providing exceptional customer service and support to patients and other departments while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform financial clearance functions including insurance verification and authorization.
  • Collect and document patient demographics and benefit analysis.
  • Provide financial counseling and pre-service collections to patients.
  • Ensure follow-up on authorizations for scheduled and urgent procedures until the date of service or discharge.
  • Monitor work queues for financial clearance and missing authorizations.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for Patient Access employees and assist in software testing.
  • Provide high-level customer service to patients, ancillary departments, and payers.
  • Assist in training new hires and shadowing Patient Access candidates.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; continued education preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in a healthcare setting, with at least 2 years in Patient Access and/or billing.
  • Strong customer service background.
  • Robust knowledge of insurance and financial processing of accounts.
  • Extended knowledge of medical terminology and billing codes (DRG, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS).
  • Proficient in EPIC ADT system.
  • Completion and passing of Patient Access Advocate II and III Advancement test.
  • Completion and passing of In-house Patient Access Account Specialist Certification test.

Nice-to-haves

  • CHAA, CHAM, or other industry equivalent certification preferred.
