About the position

The Patient Access Associate II is responsible for coordinating and performing complex functions within the Patient Access department at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. This role involves managing patient registration, scheduling appointments, and ensuring accurate financial clearance while providing compassionate support to patients and families. The associate serves as a resource for team members and participates in process improvement initiatives, reflecting the organization's commitment to children's health and well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and perform complex functions within the Patient Access department.
  • Provide general receptionist and secretarial support as needed.
  • Collect and enter accurate demographic and financial data for patient registrations.
  • Verify insurance and billing information, ensuring proper payer plan codes are used.
  • Generate necessary forms for patient visits and obtain required signatures.
  • Perform pre-registration for scheduled patients and register patients upon arrival.
  • Document interactions with patients and families, addressing any questions or issues before departure.
  • Schedule complex appointments and coordinate with other hospital areas as needed.
  • Communicate with insurance companies to obtain benefits and authorization requirements.
  • Interview patients to verify insurance and financial information, explaining financial policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 5-7 years of directly related experience preferred; healthcare experience required.
  • CHAA (Certified Healthcare Access Associate) certification obtained within 1 year of employment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Word and Excel, ADT systems, and insurance verification systems (EPIC preferred).
  • Knowledge of managed care, referral/pre-certification/authorization processes, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Excellent telephone and communication skills, strong organizational skills.
